What is actually included in the price of a website?
The same foundation ships with every build, from a R4,500 Starter site to a R16,500 store. The package decides page count and functionality, not whether the fundamentals are done right.
Mobile-first, not shrunk down
Designed on the small screen first, then opened up. Most South African traffic arrives on a phone, over mobile data, on an unreliable network.
Core Web Vitals in the build
Compressed images, lazy loading, caching, no plugin bloat. Load speed, layout shift and interaction delay are measured before launch.
On-page SEO foundations
One H1 per page, sensible heading order, unique titles and meta descriptions, readable URLs, alt text, sitemap and schema.
Analytics and Search Console
GA4 installed and tested, Search Console verified, conversion events fired on what matters — form sent, order placed. Accounts in your name.
Forms that arrive, spam handled
Tested end to end to a real inbox, with a honeypot and validation. Enquiries are stored in the site too, so a mail fault never costs a lead.
SSL, backups, clean handover
SSL forced, headers set, a full backup verified at handover. On final payment it is all yours. No lock-in.
Is WordPress the right choice for your business?
Usually, yes. WordPress and WooCommerce are our default: quick to build on, cheap to run, easy to edit yourself, tied to no supplier. For most Cape Town small businesses that is the right answer. Sometimes it is not.
| If this is you | What we would build | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A service business, a brochure site, a blog, or a shop with a normal catalogue | WordPress, or WooCommerce for the shop | You can edit it yourself, hosting is cheap, the integrations exist. R4,500 to R16,500. |
| Logins and user roles, a booking engine, a portal, or quoting logic staff use all day | A custom build, from R35,000 | Forcing that into WordPress means plugins that fight and break on update. Purpose-built is cheaper over three years. |
| Retail is the whole business and you want someone else patching the platform | Shopify — and we will tell you so | Shopify handles hosting, PCI and updates. If you never want to think about maintenance, that is worth the fee. |
| No proof anyone wants this yet. No photos, no copy, no product decided | Do not build a site yet | A website amplifies demand, it does not create it. Sell over WhatsApp first. A R3,500 strategy session beats a R8,500 site you rebuild. |
Which payment gateway should a South African store use?
Pick the one that matches how your customers already pay, then confirm fees with the provider. Card versus instant EFT is the decision that matters. Many South African shoppers have no credit card, or will not enter one in an unfamiliar checkout, but almost everyone banks online. Instant EFT alongside card is often the cheapest conversion gain a local store can make.
| Gateway | Methods | Checkout experience | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| PayFast | Card, instant EFT, local wallets | Redirect to a hosted page, then back to your thank-you page | The safe default for most WooCommerce stores. One integration, broad coverage. |
| Yoco | Card | Inline or hosted, and it lines up with Yoco card machines in-store | Retailers already taking card in person who want one dashboard. |
| Ozow | Instant EFT only | Customer signs into their own banking profile to authorise | Higher-value orders, and customers who will not use a card. |
| PayGate | Card, EFT | Redirect or embedded, with a more enterprise-style setup | Established businesses whose bank has the relationship already. |
| SnapScan | Scan to pay from the phone | QR code or payment link rather than a checkout | Deposits, invoices, in-person sales. A supplement, not the main checkout. |
| Peach Payments | Card, EFT, local alternatives | Hosted or embedded, recurring billing supported | Subscriptions, multiple brands, or a store that has outgrown one gateway. |
Redirect gateways send the customer off your site to pay. Embedded ones keep them on it and convert slightly better, but the gap is smaller than people claim. A checkout that crawls on mobile data, or hides shipping until the last step, loses far more orders.
Why hosting is a commercial risk in South Africa, not a technicality
A site that is down during load shedding is down while competitors keep taking orders. That is lost revenue on a schedule you can look up in advance. Good hosting is not automatically expensive. Bad cheap hosting costs you later.
Monitoring that tells us first
Uptime checks run against the site, so a problem is being fixed before a customer tells you. On a care plan that is our job.
Backups that actually restore
Off-server backups on a schedule, with a tested restore. An untested backup is a hope. Ask your host when they last proved one.
cPanel and LiteSpeed is home turf
We run WordPress and WooCommerce on this stack daily. Tuning caching, PHP workers and resource limits is routine, not an experiment.
Hosting and domain setup is R950 once off — cPanel and LiteSpeed, SSL, email, DNS. Monitoring, backups and updates sit in the care plans from R650 a month.
How much does a website cost in Cape Town, and what makes it expensive?
Our sites run from R4,500 to R16,500, and custom builds start at R35,000. The gap is not margin or mystery. It is six things, and you control most of them.
Page count
Every page needs design, build, copy and testing. Three pages and thirty are not the same job. Extra pages are R850 each, so the slope is visible.
Custom design versus a refined template
A good template, customised properly, gets a credible site live quickly. Bespoke design costs more because every screen is drawn from nothing.
E-commerce complexity
Fifty simple products with flat-rate shipping is straightforward. Variations, bundles, courier rates per province and stock syncing are each their own job. Complexity moves the number, not product count.
Integrations
Anything that talks to another system — accounting, a CRM, a courier, a marketplace — is built and tested against that system's rules. This is where quotes diverge most.
Content
The usual reason a project runs late is that copy and photos never arrive. Write it yourself and you control the timeline. Otherwise it is R450 a page.
Migrations and clean-up
Moving a tidy site is R1,800. Untangling ten years of plugins or a hacked install takes longer, and we say so before starting.
Scope and price are fixed before work starts. 50% to begin, 50% on launch. Starter takes one to two weeks, Business two to four, WooCommerce three to six — gated mostly on how fast content and feedback arrive.
Areas we serve around Cape Town
We are based in Cape Town and most clients sit within an hour of the CBD. That has meant work with businesses in town and in Woodstock and Observatory, along the Atlantic Seaboard in Sea Point and Green Point, and out at Century City and Milnerton. In the Southern Suburbs we have built for clients in Claremont and Constantia; in the Northern Suburbs, Durbanville, Bellville and Table View. We work further out in Somerset West, Stellenbosch and Paarl too.
Being nearby helps for a first meeting. After that most projects run over email, a call and WhatsApp, and plenty of our clients are elsewhere.
Can you redesign the site I already have?
Yes. The first question is redesign or rebuild. A tired but healthy WordPress site is worth redesigning. One on an abandoned theme, forty plugins and an unsupported PHP version is cheaper to rebuild than repair. We look first and tell you which you have.
Audit before anything else
What it runs on, what works, what is broken, what traffic and rankings it has now. You cannot protect what you have not measured.
Map every URL before it changes
Old URL to new URL, page by page, including the ones you forgot. Agreed in writing before launch, not reconstructed later from a traffic drop.
301 redirects, so your SEO equity survives
Every changed URL gets a permanent 301, live with the site, not a week later. This is the most common reason a redesign tanks rankings, and it is avoidable.
Launch, then watch
We check Search Console for crawl errors and 404s, confirm analytics is reporting, and compare traffic to last month. Fixes in the first fortnight are included.
